Outdoor Education Teaching Assistant
Work in nature with children and facilitate inquiry-based learning, science, and environmental stewardship!
We are seeking dynamic and passionate people who want to be a part of our growing outdoor learning and enrichment program. This is not your traditional teaching assistant opportunity, as we offer a unique educational setting that is committed to the growth and development of young minds while fostering a strong relationship and appreciation for nature. Year-round outdoor program, rain or shine, with opportunity for advancement, growth, levels of responsibility, and more shifts as the program grows. This job is OUTDOORS ALL DAY.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience, confidence and capacity to work with children (ages 5-11) is necessary for this position.
Punctuality and reliability once a schedule has been agreed upon.
Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment and be a problem-solver.
Able to follow program guidelines and protocols in the natural world.
Have reliable transportation.
Able to complete and pass a (DOJ & FBI) background check (if hired, we’ll cover the costs)
Physically fit to be able to hike 0.5-3 miles in mostly easy but uneven terrain carrying 10-18 lb.

Environmental science background
Creative and artistic skills for arts & crafts
Experience in teaching and/or guiding children in the natural world
Some knowledge of local flora & fauna
A passion for nature and the outdoors
A passion for working with children
Attention to detail, cleanliness, organizational skills
Responsible, reliable, flexible and problem-solver
Ability to work in a fast paced environment and multitask
Be able to work independently and as part of a team
CPR/First Aid Certified
Social media experience
Bilingual (Spanish)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide support in our outdoor learning programs that are conducted 100% in nature, rain or shine.
Ensure the care of children and support instruction following guidelines and standards.
Build awareness of the risks specific to each natural space and/or activity, as well as ability to learn how to mitigate those risks, while continuing to provide an enriching experience.
Provide for the care and safety of children in a loving, nurturing and supportive environment.
Assist with daily set up of outdoor classroom.
Assist with various experiences, activities, lessons, games, storytime that have been adapted to the outdoors.
Help to maintain fun and interactive activities.
Support a safe and secure environment where children feel comfortable, respected, heard, connected.
Ensure that all classroom/outdoor equipment and supplies are in good and safe working order and are used and maintained properly.
Take notice and notify the Director of supply needs.
Interact with families, other staff, guest speakers, part attendants/rangers, etc. with friendliness, courtesy and respect.
Take photos/videos and create weekly posts/stories for our social media platforms (Facebook & Instagram).
Bi-weekly/monthly staff meetings to ensure program safety and delivery.
COMPENSATION:
Pay based on Education, Experience and Schedule Availability
Bi-weekly and Weekly Pay Options
Outdoor Education Teaching Assistant: $18 - $22 per hour (based on experience)
Starting out as a contractor with the opportunity to reclassify after. Paid onboarding training.
CPR-First Aid certification.
LOCATION & SCHEDULE:
We’re in Escondido and North County, San Diego, CA.
Part-time on weekdays 9am-3pm (6-hr shifts plus occasional staff meetings), some holidays (optional), and remote hours.
Year-round position with minimum of 6 month commitment
